Research Laboratory: "Nursing Rehabilitation of the Chronically Ill"
HOMEPAGE

According to the official presentation of the EWMA at the Workshop on "Patient Safety" (European Parliament, May 2013) approximately 25-50% of acute hospital beds are occupied by patients with a wound. In 2007, a pressure ulcer prevalence study in 26 Hospitals all over Greece was carried out and showed a pressure ulcers prevalence of 8,03%.The European and national data ndicate the need for skilled scientists in wound care at a postgraduate level.

In 2012 the Department of Nursing of the Technological Educational Institution of Athens organized the Summer School: “New Technologies in prevention and treatment of chronic wounds and ulcers” which was official under the approvement of European Academy of Wound Technology (EAWT).

Following these, a postgraduate program of 120 ECTS under the title “Wound / Ulcer Care and Treatment” has been designed and implemented by the Department of Nursing of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, which was set out in September 2014.

Key Modules

Key Modules of the program are “Management of Chronic Wounds and Ulcers” and “Management of acute wounds”. Standalone modules cover “stoma care”, “management of burns”, while an innovation is the module “new technologies in wound care”. MSc program is expected to be endorsed by the European Academy of Wound Technology during 2016.

Faculty

Staffed by both special scientists in wound healing and academic professors this postgraduate program combines the scientific excellence and the clinical experience. The majority of faculty consists of faculty members of the Nursing department. The team is strengthened by visiting professors and guest speakers. A significant number of the faculty are certified wound specialists members of the Hellenic Wound Healing Society the European Academy of Wound Technology and the European Wound Management Association. Scientific coordinator is Associate Professor Dr. Martha Kelesi (specialized in community Nursing).

Students

51 students study in this MSc. First graduates are expected to graduate in 2016. Most of the students are registered nurses (TEI, University and Military Schools graduates) working in NHS, military hospitals and the private sector. Other specialties are pharmacists, health visitors etc. Major health industries have trusted the program by sending their employees in order to be trained.
